The Brilliant Mrs. Windsor Chapter 26

Chapter 26: Burning Bridges After Crossing

It must be said that Master Windsor’s countenance today was markedly brighter than yesterday, a boon credited entirely to Isabella.

Naturally, his fondness for his

prospective granddaughter–in–law had deepened.

His gaze wandered over Isabella’s figure, lingering momentarily with a pronounced cheerfulness.

“When will you bless me with a great–grandchild to dote on? It would

save me the envy of those old

codgers always flaunting their little

ones.”

Isabella, catching the hopeful look in Master Windsor’s eyes, found herself momentarily unable to reveal the

truth to the elderly man.

Oblivious to her turmoil, Master Windsor gestured to a servant, who

promptly presented a finely crafted sandalwood box.

He didn’t open it immediately but caressed it gently, as if lost in reminiscence.

“This belonged to Alexander’s

grandmother. She left it for the

future bride. It seems it has found its

purpose.”

Isabella paused, hesitating as she took in the object offered by Master Windsor. It was clear he genuinely cared for her–a celebrated general and a high–ranking official from a prominent family–and he held no prejudice against her origins.

“Master Windsor, I am not…”

“Take it. If it turns out that you and

Alexander are not meant to be,

consider it a parting gift from me.” His words were laden with meaning, bringing tears to Isabella’s eyes.

Such a venerable man, yet burdened with a grandson like Alexander!

Alexander sat quietly to the side, biting back his words. Well, as long as Master Windsor was happy.

Isabella bowed deeply to Master Windsor before accepting the gift and leaving with Alexander.

Cecilia, standing behind Master Windsor, was visibly upset. “Grandfather, do you really want Alex to marry such a woman?”

Master Windsor, as if not hearing her, trembled slightly as he held his cup. “Cecilia, she reminds me of your grandmother.

If only she hadn’t passed so early,

she would have adored this girl…”

Cecilia remained silent. Her grandmother was a figure absent. from her memories, only brought to

life through her grandfather’s

occasional reminiscences–a woman

of dazzling presence.

How could Isabella be compared to

her?

Not long after their car left the military compound, Alexander

suddenly spoke up. “Stop the car.”

Sebastian, puzzled, brought the car to a halt. Alexander turned to Isabella, his face an emotionless mask, and coldly instructed, “Get

out.”

Isabella was momentarily stunned. Was this what they called burning bridges after crossing?

“Alexander, what are you implying?

We’re dozens of kilometers from the

city center. It’s impossible to hail a

cab here. Do you expect me to walk back?”

“You’ve done me a favor, and I’ve fulfilled my promise not to demolish the orphanage. We’re even now. You’re free to leave.”

Isabella was left speechless by his

audacious logic.

Biting back her frustration and clutching the gift from Master

Windsor, she held her tongue.

No sooner had she exited the vehicle than Alexander’s car sped off, leaving her standing alone.

Fuming, Isabella cursed under her breath. Used and discarded just like that, Alexander had truly outdone himself.

The area was so remote that even

getting a signal on her phone was a struggle. After several attempts, she finally managed to connect with

Maxwell.

To her surprise, Maxwell arrived in

less than five minutes.

As soon as he stepped out of the car, he cast a menacing glance towards the Military Base Residential

Complex in the distance and clenched his teeth in anger, “Miss, did that bastard Alexander do something to you? I’ll take care of him right now!”
